Bar Certification Requests

Requests for School of Law certifications are processed by the Office of Student Affairs. The Office of Student Affairs typically completes bar certification requests within five (5) business days after the date that the Office receives the written request.

Requests must be made in writing on the Certification Request Form. Requests may be mailed, hand-delivered, or faxed to the Office of Student Affairs.

The School of Law does not certify college/pre-legal education. College/pre-legal education certifications must be obtained from the institution that you attended.

How do I request bar certification?
Requests must be made in writing on the Certification Request Form. Requests may be mailed, hand-delivered, or faxed to the Office of Student Affairs.

Does the School of Law certify college/pre-legal education?
No. The School of Law does not certify college/pre-legal education. College/pre-legal education certifications must be obtained from the institution that you attended.

How long does it take to process a certification request?
The Office of Student Affairs typically completes bar certification requests within five (5) business days after the date that the Office receives the written request. Please note that May through July, a very high volume of requests is received from members of the graduating class and alumni. We make every attempt to complete the requests within five business days; however, due to the high volume of requests received, it may take a few days longer. Priority is given to members of the graduating class who submit their requests by the priority deadline. Please allow time for mailed request to be received by the Office of Student Affairs. Regular mail is delivered to the main campus before it is delivered to the School of Law. Express mail and faxes are delivered directly to the School of Law. Also note that regular mail travels more slowly during the holiday period from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. Email requests are not accepted.

What is the priority deadline for graduating students?
The priority deadline for graduating students to submit their bar certification requests is May 20th for the July exam and November 20th for the February exam. Certification requests received by the priority deadline are batched and processed for each jurisdiction and then mailed to the jurisdiction via express mail. Please be mindful of the application deadline for the particular jurisdiction to which you are applying. If the application deadline is earlier than the priority deadline, you should plan accordingly. Bar certification requests may be submitted at any time throughout the year.

Does the office process rush requests?
No. The Office of Student Affairs does not process rush requests. Requests for bar certifications and other certifications are received throughout the year. Last minute requests will not be given priority over earlier submitted requests. For this reason, it is very important that you check deadline dates and plan accordingly.

What is the deadline for bar applications?
The Office of Student Affairs does not keep track of bar application deadlines for the various states. You must check with the office that administers bar examinations in the state in which you plan to sit for the exam. What assistance does the Office of Student Affairs provide in completing bar applications?
If you have questions regarding how to answer questions pertaining to character and fitness (e.g., disciplinary actions, criminal records, mental illness, disabilities, etc.), you should meet with the associate dean of student affairs, Dione Traci Duckett.
