Mariessa Terrell is a native Washingtonian who has been practicing law for over 15 years, specializing in trademark, copyright, licensing and contracts. Through her firm, SBC Law Group, Mariessa provides marketing, software licensing and intellectual property law services to a variety of corporate and business development clients. In 2003, Mariessa created Fashion Trademarks, a special division of SBC Law Group dedicated to addressing the unique needs of fashion designers, artists and cosmetic companies.
Prior to starting her own firm, Mariessa Terrell worked at the US Patent and Trademark Office as a Trademark Examining Attorney and helped to register trademarks for fashion and beauty industry leaders, including Estee Lauder, Balenciaga, Revlon, Dooney & Bourke and many others.
After drafting legislation (Bill 17-173) to create a Fashion Commission in DC, Mariessa was appointed by Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray to serve as a Fashion Commissioner in 2013.
Mariessa has lectured on branding and trademark law throughout the US and has taught fashion and marketing courses at Southeastern University and the University of the District of Columbia.
Mariessa is a published writer whose work has been featured in the IP and Technology Law Journal and Navigating Fashion Law: Leading Lawyers on Developing Clients Brands in a Changing Market and Monitoring Key Legal Developments.
Today, Mariessa continues to diligently champion the need for a strong fashion economy in DC while simultaneously providing her clients with exceptional, reasonably priced legal services. In 2013, SBC Law Group celebrated its 11th year by expanding its trademark and software licensing practice to include five business units of Lockheed Martin Corporation located in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the United Kingdom.
Mariessa is a member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA) and served as President of WALA Board of Directors from 2012 until 2014.
In addition to practicing law, Mariessa serves as the Executive Director of the High Tea Society, a mentoring program for inner city girls.
