Biography

Dr. Marsha A. Echols is a graduate of Howard University (B.A., Phi Beta Kappa) and holds advanced degrees from Georgetown University Law Center (J.D.), the Free University of Brussels (LL.M.) and Columbia University Law School (LL.M., J.S.D.). A recognized expert in the field of international trade and development, Dr. Echols studied and worked in Belgium and Switzerland before joining the law faculty. She also served as an international trade negotiator for the U.S. Government and specialized in international transactions while in engaged in the private practice of law.

Dr. Echols is the Director of the Graduate Program and of The World Food Law Institute. In addition, she teaches courses in International Business Transactions, International Sales, International Economic Law, Problems of World Order and teaches Introduction to the U.S. Legal System for Master of Laws candidates. International regional economic cooperation, the regulation of international sales of food and agriculture and agribusiness investment (including technology transfer), and international commercial law are among her areas of specialization and research. Her article “Food Safety Regulation in the European Union Food Safety and the WTO: The Interplay of Culture, Science and Technology and the United States: Different Cultures, Different Laws” and her book, FOOD SAFETY AND THE WTO: THE INTERPLAY OF CULTURE, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY consider food regulation and the cultural perspectives that influence domestic as well as international laws regarding food. Dr. Echols has traveled and lectured in several African, Caribbean and European countries and in China. She has served or is currently serving as a Member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal, the Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on International Law, World Trade Organization disputes panel and the Biotechnology Committee of the International Law Association. Dr. Echols is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Liaison to UNIDROIT for the Section of International Law of the American Bar Association. She is serving on the Planning Committee for the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law and for the 2006 International Law Weekend of the American Branch of the International Law Association. Dr. Echols received the Distinguished Faculty Author Award from the President and Provost of the University in April 2002.
